Making 3D Printing technology accessible to the Onshape community

Onshape, a professional 3D CAD system in the cloud, collaborates with Materialise Cloud to integrate 3D printing functionality. The Onshape App Store now includes the Materialise Cloud Print Preparation app that allows the Onshape user community to prepare their designs for 3D Printing.

Find out more about Onshape and its App Store.

We are bringing users the future of CAD and we see 3D Printing as playing a role in that future. Through our combined efforts, Onshape and Materialise aim to make 3D printing technology more accessible to our user community and with its deep experience in providing solutions and services to the additive manufacturing sector, Materialise has substantially augmented our efforts to assist our users in getting their ideas from design stage to 3D printed object.

Connecting CAD to 3D Printing

Materialise’s 3D printing expertise closes the gap between Onshape’s 3D CAD designs and 3D Print, enhancing the Onshape experience and allowing designers, engineers and other Onshape users to create printable 3D models with ease.

It’s not that 3D printing is an impossible challenge, but just that Materialise has 25 years of experience and can already pre-empt the mistakes which many designers are likely to make. Onshape can rely on Materialise cloud solutions to support their users in the 3D printing process.

With Materialise Cloud Print Preparation app, Materialise makes parts of its huge portfolio of 3D software solutions available to Onshape’s users, supplying tools for 3D Printing with a focus on usability and automation. As a result, Onshape’s users can rely on the same core technology as the 3D Printing professionals.

The Power of the Materialise Cloud Print Preparation App

Materialise Cloud Print Preparation is the first Materialise app available in Onshape’s App Store and aims to help designers prepare their parts for 3D Printing. Users can select a file riddled with errors, and download a fixed file converted to STL.

The Materialise Cloud Print Preparation app contains a number of powerful tools, such as:

  • STL file conversion, select a part, assembly or file in Onshape and generate an STL (accepts 15+ file formats).
  • Model Analyzer, to check 3D models for common errors such as inverted normals, bad edges and holes.
  • Model Repair, to ensure the model is watertight, manifold and error-free.
  • Wall Thickness Analyzer, to inspect for thin walls avoiding print failures or unintended gaps.
  • Parameter Extraction, calculating the number of triangles, bounding box dimensions and volume.

All the steps are automated, significantly simplifying the process from digital CAD design to physical 3D Print. Onshape’s users can simply download an optimized STL file, so they’re good to go for slicing or for ordering with a 3D print service.

Easy integration

The Materialise Cloud functionalities can be easily integrated into existing platforms or software programs. This allows users to make their files ready for 3D Printing all the while staying on the platform which they know and are comfortable with, building a stronger customer relationship.

By connecting to the Materialise Cloud API, Onshape doesn’t need to develop 3D printing software in-house and can immediately offer their user base the professional tools they need.
